Game 1 of the American League Championship Series had many of the elements of recent postseason series for the Yankees, but this one took a frightening twist in the 12th inning when Derek Jeter, the team's shortstop, captain and heart and soul went down with a fractured ankle.
Delmon Young, who tormented the Yankees in last year's division series, drove in his third run of the game in the 12th inning, and the Tigers tacked on another run after Jeter's injury to win Game 1 of the best-of-seven series, 6-4.
The Yankees gave the crowd little to be excited about until the ninth inning, and they were left with many of the same questions they faced against Baltimore: What has happened to their home-run bashing offense? And what to make of the psyche of Alex Rodriguez, who was pulled for a pinch-hitter for a third time this postseason, one game after he was benched in the decisive Game 5 of the division series.
Game 2 is Sunday in the Bronx, with Anibal Sanchez pitching for Detroit against the Yankees' Hiroki Kuroda.
