Mike Huguenin has analysis and insights on all of Saturday's big college football games, including Notre Dame's 22-13 win over U.S.C.
11:31 P.M. |One More Week to Go
There are 16 games involving F.B.S. teams next week (Thursday-Saturday), but the only one that really matters is the SEC championship game, where Alabama will meet Georgia with a berth in the national championship game opposite Notre Dame on the line.
There are five leagues that don't have championship games, and titles will be decided in four of those in regular-season games next week. The W.A.C., where Utah State has clinched the title, is the only league whose champion already is known.
11:17 P.M. |The Irish Will Play for the Title
Notre Dame fans can go ahead and make their reservations to Miami for the national title game. The Irish kept U.S.C. out of the end zone after the Trojans had a first-and-goal at the 2 and lead 19-10 with 2:33 left. It will be Notre Dame against the SEC champ for the national title Jan. 7.
And those who think the SEC team will roll obviously haven't been paying that much attention. The Irish have a physical front seven on defense and an offensive line that has gotten better as the season has progressed. The Irish have an elite tight end and two solid tailbacks. Have the Irish looked mediocre at times in some games? Sure. But they also are unbeaten and have found different ways to win games.
11:06 P.M. |Irish Creeping Closer to Miami
Notre Dame's Kyle Brindza has kicked his fifth field goal and the Irish have taken a 22-13 lead at U.S.C. with 5:58 left in the game.
10:49 P.M. |ACC Again Proves It's Not Up to Snuff
A.C.C. commissioner John Swofford has far bigger issues than Maryland leaving his conference for the Big Ten. The A.C.C. is a clear-cut No. 5 among the football-playing conferences and a long way from being in the top four.
Saturday was a big opportunity for the league, as Clemson and Florida State – the two best teams in the league – were at home against in-state archrivals from the SEC. But the Tigers and Seminoles laid eggs in losing to South Carolina (with its backup quarterback and backup tailback) and Florida, respectively. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech – which will play F.S.U. in the league championship game next week – was crushed by Georgia in another in-state rivalry game.
Clemson (46.5 points per game), Georgia Tech (40.0 ppg) and Florida State (39.8 ppg) ranked first through third, respectively, in scoring offense in A.C.C. games. In addition, Clemson (542.8 yards per game), F.S.U. (498.2 ypg) and Tech (473.1 ypg) were first, second and fourth, respectively, in total offense in A.C.C. games. So, what happened Saturday? Those offenses were shut down by defenses filled with speedy, physical players – i.e., the types of players not playing defense in the A.C.C.
Tech managed just 10 points. F.S.U. had 26 points (one TD came on the game's final play) and 301 yards. And Clemson was held to 17 points and 330 yards. To make matters worse for Clemson: The loss almost certainly ends any hope for an at-large B.C.S. bid.
In addition, Florida (37 points) and Georgia (42) both scored more points than they had averaged in SEC games while South Carolina basically hit its average.
Good news for Swofford and the A.C.C.: There's always basketball season.
10:33 P.M. |Irish Now Lead by Nine
Notre Dame has kicked a field goal with 31 seconds left in the third quarter to take a 19-10 lead at U.S.C. It was the first points scored in the second half.
10:09 P.M. |Manziel Padding His Stats
Well, Johnny Manziel still is in the game for Texas A&M and now has thrown for 322 yards. A&M is blasting Missouri 52-16 late in the third quarter. This is A&M's last regular-season game and thus Manziel's final chance to impress Heisman voters.
9:58 P.M. |Manziel Sets SEC Mark
It looks as if Johnny Manziel is done for the night as Texas A&M leads Missouri 49-10 late in the third quarter; it will be A&M's 10th victory of the season, and the loss means Mizzou won't go bowling.
Manziel has thrown for 293 yards and three TDs and rushed for 66 yards and another score against the Tigers. He has set the SEC single-season record for total offense, breaking the record held by Auburn QB Cam Newton in 2010. Newton, in turn, broke the record set in 2007 by Florida QB Tim Tebow. Newton and Tebow, of course, won Heisman Trophies.
9:52 P.M. |Stanford Wins Round One Vs. U.C.L.A.
Stanford beats host U.C.L.A. 35-17 to win the Pac-12 North and set up a rematch of the same teams next week in the league championship game. Stanford hasn't been to the Rose Bowl since the 1999 season under coach Ty Willingham. U.C.L.A. hasn't played in that bowl since the 1998 season under coach Bob Toledo.
9:43 P.M. |Irish Lead at Halftime
Notre Dame's Kyle Brindza connected on a 52-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to give the top-ranked Irish a 16-10 lead over U.S.C. heading into halftime.
9:40 P.M. |Ole Miss Rolling in 'Egg Bowl'
A big third quarter has propelled Ole Miss to a 34-17 lead over visiting Mississippi State in the "Egg Bowl." Ole Miss, which needed to win to become bowl-eligible, has outscored the Bulldogs 17-0 in the period. Ole Miss was winless in the SEC last season, and new coach Hugh Freeze has done an excellent job in his first season.
Baylor, Michigan State, Purdue, Southern Methodist and Virginia Tech won today to become bowl-eligible. Ole Miss needs a win to get to six victories and is tied with Mississippi State, 17-17, at halftime. Rice also needs one more win, and the Owls lead U.T.E.P., 17-14, early in the third quarter. Troy and Wake Forest lost in their attempts to become bowl-eligible, and Missouri is being whipped at Texas A&M in its attempt.
9:04 P.M. |Trojans Get on the Board
U.S.C. has answered Notre Dame with a TD, on an 11-yard pass from Max Wittek to Robert Woods that cut the lead to 10-7. Wittek was 5-of-5 for 48 yards on the 60-yard scoring drive.
8:52 P.M. |Irish Increase Lead
Top-ranked Notre Dame is having no trouble carving up U.S.C.'s defense, taking a 10-0 lead with 1:48 left in the first quarter. The Irish have scored on both their possessions, taking advantage of a Trojans defense that has struggled to stop good offenses this season.
8:48 P.M. |Stanford Scores Again
Stanford is blowing it open against U.C.L.A. On the kickoff after the TD that gave Stanford a 28-10 lead, U.C.L.A. fumbled and Stanford returned it for a TD and a 35-10 advantage.
8:45 P.M. |Stanford Has 18-Point Lead
Stepfan Taylor is running wild as Stanford has built a 28-10 lead midway through the third quarter at U.C.L.A. A win puts the Cardinal in next week's Pac-12 championship game against the Bruins. Taylor has rushed for 147 yards and two TDs on 21 carries.
8:32 P.M. |Irish Take Early Lead
Notre Dame marched to a field goal on its first possession and leads 3-0 at U.S.C. The Irish moved 65 yards on nine plays.
8:20 P.M. |Will N.D.-U.S.C. Ever Start?
O.K., ABC, enough pregame show. Let's get the Notre Dame-U.S.C. game kicked off.
8:17 P.M. |Texas A&M Ripping Mizzou
Texas A&M is hammering fellow SEC newcomer Missouri, leading 28-0 early in the second quarter. A&M has scored on all four of its possessions.
7:46 P.M. |Stanford Increases Lead
Stanford has taken a 21-7 lead at U.C.L.A. with a bit more than six minutes left in the first half. If the Cardinal win, these teams meet again next week in the Pac-12 championship game, but at Stanford.
7:40 P.M. |SEC Has Its Way Against A.C.C.
The perception is the A.C.C. is weak this season. Thing is, that probably is reality, as well. The two participants in next week's A.C.C. championship game were outscored 79-36 in rivalry games against in-state foes from the SEC. Georgia blasted Georgia Tech 42-10 and Florida downed Florida State 37-26 (F.S.U. scored its final TD on the final play of the game).
7:24 P.M. |Sooners Pull One Out in Overtime
Oklahoma scored with 15 seconds left in the game to tie it, then beat Oklahoma State 51-48 in overtime to keep alive its hopes for a Big 12 title and a B.C.S. berth. Sooners QB Landry Jones threw for 500 yards and three TDs, but each of the Sooners' final two TDs came on the ground.
7:20 P.M. |Five-Loss Badgers Still in Big Ten Title Game
Wisconsin lost 24-21 in overtime at Penn State. It was the Badgers' fifth loss of the season. Still, they will play in the Big Ten title game, and a win there puts the Badgers in the Rose Bowl.
7:13 P.M. |Huge Fourth Quarter Lifts Gators
Florida used a fourth-quarter onslaught, scoring 24 points, to down Florida State 37-26 and finish off an 11-1 regular season. Florida was No. 4 in the BCS this week and now must cheer for U.S.C. to beat visiting Notre Dame tonight for any hope at playing in the national title game.
7:10 P.M. |Offense Aplenty in Magnolia State
Two touchdowns in two minutes in the Egg Bowl. Ole Miss scored and Mississippi State answered.
7:02 P.M. |Who Designed U.C.L.A.'s Uniforms?
It has taken a while to comment on the Stanford-U.C.L.A. game just because the Bruins' uniforms are hideous and make it difficult to type while one is watching the game.
6:55 P.M. |OT in Happy Valley Looms
Wisconsin has tied it at 21 at Penn State with 18 seconds left.
6:53 P.M. |Florida Leads by 10
Florida turns a good punt return into another TD and now owns a 30-20 lead at Florida State with 7:00 left in the game. QB E.J. Manuel, who missed Florida State's last possession, is back in the game. He has thrown three picks and fumbled once.
6:41 P.M. |F.S.U. Using Backup QB
Florida State QB E.J. Manuel may have suffered a concussion on a hit in which he fumbled against Florida. Backup QB Clint Trickett is in the game for the Seminoles with about 10 minutes left in the game.
6:38 P.M. |Gators In Lead Again
After coughing up the lead to host Florida State, Florida has rallied for a 23-20 advantage with 11:01 left in the game. The most recent TD came on a 37-yard run by Mike Gillislee on the first play following Florida State's fifth turnover. Gillislee has rushed for 137 yards and two scores. Florida State hadn't allowed a team to rush for more than 136 yards this season.
6:34 P.M. |Oklahoma Rallies to Tie
Oklahoma has scored 11 consecutive points to tie visiting Oklahoma State at 38. The most recent TD came on a punt return by WR Jalen Saunders, a transfer from Fresno State who became eligible at midseason. Oklahoma hit a two-point conversion pass after that TD.
6:29 P.M. |Vandy On Way to Eighth Victory
Vanderbilt is pounding host Wake Forest 55-14 midway through the fourth quarter. It will be Vandy's eighth win of the season, the Commodores' first eight-win season since 1982. Vandy scored 41 points last week in blasting Tennessee; it's the first time Vandy has scored 40 points in back-to-back games since 2005, but the Commodores lost both. The last time Vandy scored 40 points in back-to-back wins was 1969, when it beat Kentucky and Davidson.
6:05 P.M. |Oregon Routing Oregon State
Oregon is pounding host Oregon State 48-17 with a bit less than nine minutes left in the game. The Ducks have six rushing TDs and have picked off Beavers QB Sean Mannion four times. Oregon, which is No. 5 in the B.C.S., also needed No. 4 Florida to lose today to have any kind of shot at playing for the national title, and the Gators trail Florida State midway through the third quarter.
5:56 P.M. |F.S.U. Takes the Lead
A quick turn of events in Tallahassee has Florida State now leading Florida 17-13. The Gators' offense has returned to its inept self early in the second half, and a poor punt and a fumble have enabled the Seminoles to take the lead with 8:30 left in the third quarter.
5:50 P.M. |Southern Miss' Futility Continues
Southern Miss finished 12-2 last season and coach Larry Fedora left for North Carolina. Southern Miss is on its way to a 0-12 finish this season under coach Ellis Johnson. Memphis leads the Golden Eagles (0-11) 21-3 late in the first half.
5:44 P.M. |Michigan State Defense Carrying the Load
Michigan State has to win at Minnesota to become bowl-eligible, and the Spartans' defense certainly is doing its part. Michigan State leads 16-7 with a bit more than nine minutes left in the third quarter and Minnesota has managed just four first downs and 62 total yards.
5:35 P.M. |Big Play Lifts Cowboys
Oklahoma State scored on a 75-yard pass on the first play of the second half to take a 31-24 lead at Oklahoma.
5:28 P.M. |Oregon Scores Again
Oregon scored its second TD in less than two minutes to take a 34-17 lead at Oregon State. Oregon State fumbled the kickoff after an Oregon TD, and the Ducks made them pay.
5:23 P.M. |Oregon Rebuilds Lead
Host Oregon State had scored 10 consecutive points to cut Oregon's lead to 20-17, but the Ducks responded with a TD for a 27-17 with 6:59 left in the third quarter. Oregon has rushed for 324 yards.
5:17 P.M. |Tide Continues to Roll
Alabama is going to take a 42-0 lead over Auburn into halftime. The Tide has 328 yards of offense, and QB A.J. McCarron has tossed three TD passes.
5:09 P.M. |Florida's Offense Doing the Job
Florida leads 13-3 at Florida State in its attempt to keep its long-shot national title hopes alive. The Gators have gained 191 yards against a Florida State defense that came in allowing just 236.3 yards and 13.1 points per game.
5:05 P.M. |Tide Could Set Record
Alabama leads Auburn 35-0 with 4:43 left in the first half. If Tide coach Nick Saban keeps his foot on the gas, the outcome likely will challenge the Tide's biggest margin of victory in the series. Alabama won 55-0 in 1948.
4:57 P.M. |Oklahoma Ties It Up
Oklahoma has fought back to tie Oklahoma State at 17 with 2:42 left in the first half. O.U. already has 222 passing yards.
4:53 P.M. |Tide Pounding Tigers
To no one's surprise, Alabama is rolling, 28-0, against Auburn. It also would surprise no one if Auburn fired coach Gene Chizik either Sunday or Monday.
4:32 P.M. |Badgers' Ball Sets NCAA Record
Wisconsin leads host Penn State 14-7 early in the second quarter. Badgers TB Montee Ball scored one of Wisconsin's TDs; that gives him a F.B.S.-record 79 career touchdowns. He had been tied with former Miami (Ohio) TB Travis Prentice.
With his TD today, Wisconsin's Montee Ball has the most career TDs (79) in N.C.A.A. history. My story from 2 wks ago — http://t.co/YjfxAjlF
— Tim Rohan (@TimRohan) 24 Nov 12
4:26 P.M. |Michigan State Has Work to Do
Michigan State has been the Big Ten's biggest disappointment, and the Spartans must win today at Minnesota to become bowl-eligible. The Golden Gophers lead 7-6 after one quarter.
4:15 P.M. |Ducks Flying High
Oregon leads host Oregon State 20-7 midway through the second quarter in "The Civil War." Oregon already has 304 total yards, including 264 on the ground.
4:12 P.M. |Oklahoma State Leads O.U. Early
Oklahoma State has opened a 14-0 lead on host Oklahoma, which must win to remain in the running for the Big 12 title.
4:07 P.M. |UConn Wins in Three OTs
Connecticut kicked a field goal in the third overtime to finish off a 23-20 upset of Louisville. UConn must beat Cincinnati in its regular-season finale to become bowl-eligible.
4:03 P.M. |S.M.U. Going to a Bowl Again
S.M.U. upset Tulsa 35-27 to clinch a bowl bid. It will be the fourth bowl in a row for the Mustangs, who never had been to more than two bowls in a row until coach June Jones arrived.
3:56 P.M. |Early Leads for Alabama, Florida
Georgia scored on its first drive today in its rout of Georgia Tech, and two other SEC teams – Alabama and Florida – still in the hunt for a national title did the same against Auburn and Florida State, respectively. Alabama scored a TD against Auburn, while Florida kicked a field goal at Florida State.
3:39 P.M. |Purdue is Going Bowling
Purdue scored 42 second-half points to beat archrival Indiana 56-35 and clinch a bowl bid.
3:35 P.M. |Tense Times in the Big East
Pitt has finished off a 27-6 win over Rutgers, but Louisville has rallied to force overtime against Connecticut with the game tied at 10. Louisville drove 90 yards in the final two minutes to tie it with 21 seconds left.
There could be a four-way tie atop the Big East standings, with Louisville, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Syracuse. But if there is a four-way tie, the winner of Thursday's Louisville-Rutgers game almost certainly will get the league's automatic B.C.S. bid because of the Big East's tiebreaker system.
3:23 P.M. |Hokies Get Their Kicks
Virginia Tech kicked a last-play field goal to beat archrival Virginia 17-14, which will extend the Hokies' postseason streak to 20 consecutive seasons. Tech has won nine in a row in the series.
3:22 P.M. |Buckeyes Finish 12-0
Ohio State moved to 12-0 with a 26-21 win over visiting Michigan. This is not a vintage Buckeyes teams, but it did more than enough to finish unbeaten in a down season for the Big Ten. And remember that there was no carrot (i.e., a postseason appearance) at the end of the stick.
What should worry other coaches in the Big Ten is that Urban Meyer took a team with offensive players recruited to run a pro-style attack and finished unbeaten in the first season using the spread. QB Braxton Miller is a perfect fit for the spread, but look for Meyer to be able to upgrade at running back and wide receiver with players better-suited for the spread.
Meyer is a demon on the recruiting trail when he is fully invested, and he should be fully invested for at least the next few seasons, which, frankly, should not just worry but out-and-out scare other Big Ten coaches.
3:16 P.M. |Buckeyes Closing In on Perfection
Ohio State looks as if it is going to finish 12-0. It has a first-and-10 on Michigan's 22 with 1:26 left leading 26-21.
3:07 P.M. |Baylor Falls Behind Early
Baylor crushed then-No. 1 Kansas State last week, but it doesn't appear as if there will be any carryover for the Bears. Texas Tech leads Baylor 14-0 with a bit more than three minutes left in the first quarter. Baylor (5-5) needs one more win for bowl eligibility and closes the season next week against visiting Oklahoma State.
2:54 P.M. |Indiana-Purdue Tied
Purdue (5-6) has to win today to become bowl-eligible, but archrival Indiana (4-7) is making things tough for the Boilermakers. I.U. has tied it at 35 with 12:14 left in the game.
2:36 P.M. |Northwestern On Way to 9-3 Mark
Northwestern is laying the lumber to Illinois, leading 48-14 going into the fourth quarter en route to a 9-3 regular-season mark. As good as this season has been, it could've been magical. The Wildcats lost by one to Nebraska and by a TD to Michigan in overtime. They also lost by 11 to Penn State in a game they led by 11 entering the fourth quarter. The Wildcats missed Ohio State and Wisconsin in league play.
2:27 P.M. |Wolverines' Defense Steps Up
Ohio State had a first down at Michigan's 13, but the Wolverines' defense held and the Buckeyes missed a field goal. Ohio State leads 23-21 with a bit more than three minutes left in the third quarter.
2:19 P.M. |Buckeyes Force a Fumble
A fumble by Denard Robinson midway through the third quarter has given Ohio State possession on Michigan's 37. The Buckeyes lead 23-21.
1:49 P.M. |S.M.U. Doing What It Needs to Do
June Jones-coached S.M.U. has to beat visiting Tulsa today to become bowl-eligible, and the Mustangs lead 28-6 late in the first half. Tulsa already has clinched the Conference USA West title.
1:42 P.M. |Louisville, Rutgers Trail at Halftime
Pitt is whipping Rutgers and will take a 21-0 lead into halftime. Rutgers, which leads the Big East race, has managed just 51 yards. Louisville, the other team in the Big East title hunt, also is losing at halftime, 10-0 to Connecticut.
Rutgers is 18th and Louisville 20th in this week's B.C.S. standings. Should both lose, Kent State (11-1) and Boise State (9-2) suddenly become contenders for a B.C.S. bid. Boise State is 22nd and Kent State 23rd in this week's B.C.S. standings. Under B.C.S. rules, if a champion from a non-automatic qualifying conference finishes in the top 16 and ahead of the champion from an automatic qualifying conference in the final B.C.S. standings, the non-AQ team is guaranteed a B.C.S. bid. But only one non-AQ team is guaranteed a bid.
Boise is off today and finishes the regular season at Nevada next Saturday. Kent State plays Northern Illinois (11-1) in the M.A.C. championship game next Friday. N.I.U. presumably would move into the B.C.S. top 25 if it beats Kent State.
1:31 P.M. |Long TD Run Gives Michigan the Lead
A highlight-film run by Denard Robinson has given Michigan a 21-17 lead at Ohio State with 40 seconds left in the first half. Robinson scored on a 67-yard jaunt, bouncing off two would-be tacklers at Michigan's 45, then turning on the jets to score the go-ahead TD.
1:24 P.M. |Northwestern On Track for Ninth Win
Northwestern (8-3) leads Illinois 24-14 late in the first half in its quest for just the sixth nine-win season in school history. A win today and in its bowl would give Northwestern only the third 10-win season in school history.
1:11 P.M. |Who Wants to Win the Big East?
Louisville and Rutgers are the only teams remaining in the hunt for the Big East's B.C.S. berth, but both are losing today. The host Cardinals trail Connecticut 10-0 with a bit more than nine minutes left in the first half, and Rutgers is behind 7-0 at Pittsburgh with a bit more than six minutes left in the first half. Louisville and Rutgers meet next week at Rutgers.
12:59 P.M. |Wolverines Take Lead
Michigan has spoiled unbeaten seasons for Ohio State four times and are looking to do it again today; the Wolverines just took a 14-10 lead with 10:42 left in the second quarter in Columbus. Michigan spoiled perfect Ohio State seasons in 1969, '73, '95 and '96.
12:56 P.M. |Hokies Take the Lead
Virginia Tech, which has been the biggest disappointment in the A.C.C. and one of the biggest nationally, leads rival Virginia 7-0 early in the second quarter. The Hokies (5-6) have to win to become bowl-eligible; they have made 19 consecutive postseason appearances, the third-longest streak in the nation (behind Florida State and Florida).
12:52 P.M. |Georgia Increases Lead
Georgia, which already has advanced to next week's SEC championship game, is whipping rival Georgia Tech 21-3. Tech will be in next week's A.C.C. title game. The Bulldogs have had the ball three times and scored three touchdowns.
12:48 P.M. |Purdue Looking for Bowl Bid
Purdue needs to beat archrival Indiana to become bowl-eligible, and the Boilermakers lead 14-7 after one quarter. Purdue is looking for its second bowl in a row and its ninth since the 2000s began.
12:28 P.M. |Big Play Helps Wolverines Tie It
Ohio State's pass defense has been spotty all season – the Buckeyes are 11th in the Big Ten and 84th nationally in pass defense – and Michigan has made the Buckeyes pay early in their showdown. QB Devin Gardner hit Roy Roundtree with a 75-yard TD pass and the Wolverines have tied it at 7 in Columbus with 7:10 left in the first quarter.
12:25 P.M. |Georgia Tech Is In Trouble
It is barely midway through the first quarter, but Georgia Tech already is on the verge of falling too far behind to catch up against Georgia. The Bulldogs have had the ball twice and lead 14-0. Given Tech's struggles throwing the ball because of its triple-option offense, it behooves the Yellow Jackets to score on their next possession.
Georgia Tech and Michigan tried to answer quick TDs by Georgia and Ohio State, respectively, but after nice drives, each team fumbled in (Tech) or near (Michigan) the red zone.
12:12 P.M. |Quick Scores by Bulldogs, Buckeyes
Georgia and Ohio State definitely are ready to play: Both marched quickly downfield for a TD in their rivalry games against Georgia Tech and Michigan, respectively.
12:04 P.M. |Another Big Day On Tap
Each of the past two Saturdays has seen the No. 1 team in the B.C.S. fall. Will it happen again today?
Alabama lost two weeks ago and Kansas State was routed last week. Tonight, top-ranked Notre Dame faces a win-and-you're-in-the-B.C.S.-title-game scenario when it plays at U.S.C. The Trojans (7-4) have been a disappointment this season, but they can put some salve on their wounds and brighten the day of millions of Notre Dame haters with the upset. Redshirt freshman QB Max Wittek, who has all the needed physical tools, will make his first college start in place of an injured Matt Barkley. Wittek can etch himself into U.S.C. lore (and, frankly, college football lore) if he can guide an upset of the Irish.
Numerous other rivalry games are on tap, as well, with Florida-Florida State in Tallahassee of particular interest. Florida is No. 4 in the B.C.S. and the Gators could end up in the title game with a victory and an Irish loss.
Oregon-Oregon State, Alabama-Auburn and Georgia-Georgia Tech also have a bearing on the national title hunt. And the Stanford-U.C.L.A. matchup in L.A. could be the first of back-to-back games between the teams. If Stanford wins, it takes the Pac-12 North title and would play Pac-12 South titlist U.C.L.A. again next Saturday in Palo Alto.
Michigan-Ohio State has no bearing on the title hunt, but the Buckeyes will be looking to finish an unbeaten season. Ohio State is banned from the postseason because of past N.C.A.A. transgressions, but a perfect record in coach Urban Meyer's first season would be historic.
In addition, the 20-team F.C.S. playoffs get under way today with four games; the top 12 seeds get first-round byes. North Dakota State (10-1) is the No. 1 seed. The final is Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas.
Oregon and Oregon State will kick off soon for latest Civil War. At stake (sort of): the Platypus Trophy. #NYT story: http://t.co/9LaBzwxW

Correction: November 25, 2012
An earlier version of a caption with this article misstated the quarter in which Corey Brown scored against Michigan. He scored in the second quarter, not second half.
