Jason Kidd, center, who had 18 points, including the deciding 3-pointer with 24.1 seconds left, and Tyson Chandler celebrating for the Knicks, now 16-5.
Jason Kidd planted himself 26 feet from the basket and Jerry Stackhouse charged — two gray-bearded basketball veterans on a collision course, with a game hanging in the balance and 17,732 New Yorkers of various stripes screeching in various octaves.
If every edition of the battle of the boroughs goes down like this, the burgeoning Nets-Knicks rivalry will be very healthy indeed.
They created another instant classic Tuesday night at Barclays Center, battling through a taut fourth quarter until Kidd — at 39, the N.B.A.'s third oldest player — hit the decisive shot, a 3-pointer with 24.1 seconds left that sent half the arena into delirium and the other half into despair.
Kidd missed his free throw after Stackhouse's foul, but the Knicks had done enough, holding on for a thrilling 100-97 victory while reasserting their municipal primacy.
"That's why we got him," said Carmelo Anthony, who dominated the night with 45 points. "We know how much of a big-time player he is, especially coming down the stretch, how smart of a player he is. But for them to leave a guy like that open — he came up big-time for us tonight."
The Knicks buffed up their East-leading record to 16-5, while sending the reeling Nets (11-9) to their fifth straight defeat. The victory also served as payback for the Knicks' overtime loss in Brooklyn on Nov. 26.
Kidd missed that first game because of back issues, leaving his teammates and Knicks fans to wonder what kind of difference he might have made in a close game. On Tuesday, he provided an emphatic answer, with an 18-point, 6-rebound, 6-assist performance and the shot heard 'round the oculus.
Gerald Wallace and Deron Williams both missed 3-pointers on the Nets' frantic final possession, after the Nets chose not to call a timeout. When the buzzer sounded, Kidd pumped his fist and jumped into the embrace of J. R. Smith, an image that demonstrated, quite clearly, that these New York turf battles matter much more than anyone admits.
"It's just another game," Kidd insisted afterward. "I'm too old for that. I'm happy that they're here in Brooklyn. They have a great arena and a great fan base. They have a great team."
Andray Blatche led the Nets with 23 points, but he had a critical basket negated by a basket-interference call in the final minutes. Reggie Evans had a season-high 18 rebounds. Williams had 18 points and 10 assists, but said: "I need to play better. I don't feel like I've had a good game yet this season."
It was a devastating defeat for the Nets, who led for most of the game despite playing again without the injured center Brook Lopez. They held a 16-point lead in the first quarter, a 10-point lead in the third and a 7-point lead with 10 minutes 21 seconds left in the fourth.
The Nets took their last lead, 91-88, on a dunk by Blatche. The Knicks tied the score at 91-91 on a Kidd 3-pointer and never trailed again. The game was tied three more times, at 93-93, 95-95 and 97-97.
Smith, who scored 16 points despite back spasms, fired a deep 3-pointer on the Knicks' first attempt to break the tie. He missed, and Tyson Chandler tapped the ball out to the perimeter, where Anthony collected it. The ball eventually found its way to Raymond Felton, who zipped it to the open Kidd as the 38-year-old Stackhouse leapt at him.
"You hate to see a guy like that catch the ball at the end of the game," Stackhouse said,"because most of the time something bad happens for the opposing team and something good happens for his team."
The Nets dominated the paint by a 48-20 margin, but the Knicks again thrived with their 3-point shooting, making 14 of 28 shots. Kidd struck six times from the arc, and Anthony five times.
Some Nets questioned the basket-interference call against Blatche, which negated a basket that would have given them a 93-91 lead. Blatche said he was more upset by allowing Chandler the tap-out.
"Tyson Chandler made a good play by tapping the ball out and gave them a second chance, and that's on me," said Blatche, who finished with four rebounds.
