In the five years since he started having runway shows, Christian Siriano has gone from fluff to faux fur.
In his fall collection this afternoon, Mr. Siriano caught on to the season's trend for severe and polished outfits, showing nothing but black, black, black for the first half dozen looks. A black turtleneck came with faux shearling shoulders and a simple black dress was made of a fabric with a subtle chevron pattern.
As subtlety is not Mr. Siriano's strong suit (see "Project Runway"), this was something of a surprise, and such downright conservative designs could potentially expand the designer's customer base for the future. But that does not quite sound like the Christian Siriano we all know and love.
So after the black outfits came the sparkly gold ones, like a gold python velvet gown. Why not? And throw in a filigree evening cape while you're at it. Why not add a dress made entirely of see-through gold mesh covered with gold beads? Mr. Siriano did, and the model who wore it seemed to be channeling Paris Hilton as she glided down the runway. Another one appeared in a gold swing skirt paired with a sheer gold shirt.
Also, there were some reliably over-the-top shoes, from Mr. Siriano's Payless collection, which, like the clothes, were inspired by the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg. They were sparkly heels and platforms that had some kind of large beaded hoop sticking out of the toe, actually inspired by vintage Deco jewelry, outlandish enough to appeal, at least, to a Russian princess.
