An 18-year-old man was killed in Brooklyn on Saturday morning after being struck by the compactor of a privately owned garbage truck, the police said.
A police official said that the man, Luis Camarillo of the Bronx, was standing at the rear of a truck that had been loaded with recycled paper. A second worker was behind the steering wheel of the truck, which was parked inside a brick building at 135 Plymouth Street, the police said, in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge and about a block from the East River.
"The compactor comes down and he's crushed," the official said, adding that no criminality was suspected. It was not immediately clear what Mr. Camarillo was doing when he was struck by the compactor.
Mr. Camarillo was brought to Long Island College Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the police. On Saturday afternoon, a single strand of yellow police tape was stretched across an entrance to a ground-floor garage inside the building, between Pearl and Adams Streets.
A sign on the building bore the name Chambers Paper Fibres Corporation, a company that operates paper recycling plants in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Buffalo and Canada. Nobody answered a telephone call to the company's office on Saturday.
Investigators from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were at the site on Saturday afternoon. Edmund Fitzgerald, a spokesman for the United States Labor Department said in an e-mail that the health and safety administration's Manhattan office had opened an inspection. He added that the inspection would determine if there were any violations of workplace safety standards connected to the death.
