The Australian Jason Day holds sole possession of the lead after 36 holes at the Masters on Friday, finishing at six under par with four birdies on the back nine. Day, who finished tied for second at the 2011 Masters, had never topped the leader board overnight at a major.
Day is one shot ahead of his countryman Marc Leishman and the American veteran Fred Couples, who are tied for second at five under.
Angel Cabrera, Jim Furyk, and Brandt Snedeker are tied for fourth at four under. Tiger Woods, who had his back nine derailed by a severe bounce off the flag pole on No. 15, is part of a seven-way tie for seventh.
As the day wrapped up, most eyes were on the middle-to-bottom part of the scoreboard, as the cut line hovered around the name of 14-year-old Guan Tianlang of China, who just barely survived with a score of four over.
Guan would have advanced more comfortably had he not been assessed a rare stroke penalty for slow play on the 17th hole. Despite the unusual ruling, Guan did not take opportunities offered to him by Tom Rinaldi of ESPN to criticize or bemoan the controversial ruling.
"I respect their decision," he said.
