In Comptroller’s Race, Spitzer Dwarfs Stringer in Spending

The outlay represented only a modest fraction of the more than $2.5 million that Mr. Spitzer's campaign has spent since he announced his candidacy on July 7, dwarfing what his opponent, Scott M. Stringer, has spent in the same period.

Mr. Spitzer, a former governor, is paying for his campaign with his family's considerable wealth. Mr. Stringer, who is participating in the city's public matching funds program, has accused Mr. Spitzer of trying to buy his way back into public office.

Mr. Spitzer has contributed $3.7 million to his campaign so far, according to the filing. Most of his spending has been on television advertising, which has totaled more than $2 million. His largest expense for petitioning was the $165,000 he paid to a consultant, Jonathan Trichter; he also spent $11,341 on a petitioning party at a Midtown restaurant.

In the most recent filing period, which spanned from July 12 to Aug. 5, Mr. Stringer reported expenditures of about $173,000, including $101,800 on polling. He recorded about $310,000 in contributions during that time, and now has about $4.6 million in his campaign account.

Mr. Stringer, the Manhattan borough president, normally would be limited to spending about $4 million on the primary. But because of Mr. Spitzer's spending, the city's Campaign Finance Board has raised the limit to about $6 million. Mr. Stringer's campaign is also being supported by independent expenditures financed by labor unions and women's groups, as well as business leaders who want to thwart Mr. Spitzer's candidacy.

On Saturday, Mr. Stringer's campaign again attacked Mr. Spitzer for his spending, pointing out the money he paid to hire workers to gather signatures.

"Eliot Spitzer spent more per day getting his name on the ballot than the median New York City voter makes in a year," Audrey Gelman, a spokeswoman for Mr. Stringer, said.

A spokesman for Mr. Spitzer, Hari Sevugan, described Mr. Stringer as "flustered" and offered no apology for the campaign's spending.

"Unlike Mr. Stringer, Eliot is not a career politician with the power and money of the political and financial establishment propping up his campaign," Mr. Sevugan said.
