MASON, Ohio — Only 32 days after surprising the tennis world by winning the Wimbledon title, Marion Bartoli abruptly announced her retirement after losing a second-round match at the Western & Southern Open, a warm-up to the United States Open.
"Well, it's never easy, and obviously there is never a time to say it or whatever," Bartoli said, citing recurring pain as the reason for her decision. "But that was actually the last match of my career. Sorry."
She added: "It's time for me to retire and to call it a career. I feel it's time for me to walk away, actually."
Ranked No. 7, Bartoli lost, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, against 25th-ranked Simona Halep of Romania in a match that ended when a forehand from Bartoli landed long. Bartoli showed little visible emotion as she left the court, but she said that after two hours of considering her physical condition, she decided to retire.
Her eyes were red with tears when she made the announcement.
Bartoli, a 28-year-old from France, endured multiple injuries even as she enjoyed the highlight of her career this year, defeating Sabine Lisicki to win the Wimbledon title. She said her Achilles', shoulder, hips and lower back continuously hurt when she played.
"My body just can't do it anymore," Bartoli said. "I've been already through a lot of injuries since the beginning of the year. I've been on the tour for so long, and I really push through and leave it all during that Wimbledon."
She continued: "I really felt I gave all the energy I have left inside my body. I made my dream a reality, and it will stay forever with me, but now my body just can't cope with everything. I have pain everywhere after 45 minutes or an hour of play. I've been doing this for so long, and, yeah, it's just body-wise, I just can't do it anymore."
There had been no previous indication from Bartoli that her professional career was drawing to a close.
A stunned group of French players watched her televised announcement at a nearby hotel, and several expressed shock that she would make such a major decision so quickly after a loss.
