ATLANTA — The Knicks arrived here accompanied by their usual turbulence. Starting guard Iman Shumpert, perhaps the player with the most upside on the roster, was mentioned in trade rumors. The team's owner, James L. Dolan, guaranteed a win onstage with his blues band, and the team's toughness on defense was questioned without the injured Tyson Chandler. Coach Mike Woodson was receiving blame for the team's uneven start.

Turbulence was about to become turmoil when the Knicks abruptly found some resolve on Wednesday. Leading the Atlanta Hawks by 10 at halftime, they trailed by 6 in the fourth quarter when they suddenly started making shots and clamped down on defense to earn a 95-91 win.

Carmelo Anthony played 40 minutes and scored 25 points to lead the Knicks. The 7-footer Andrea Bargnani, a forward his entire seven-year career in the N.B.A. and now a starting center with Chandler sidelined, scored 20 points and had a season-high 11 rebounds.

The rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. added 14 points.

Woodson shook up his lineup and started J. R. Smith, the N.B.A.'s best sixth man last season, as the shooting guard over Pablo Prigioni. Woodson said he needed veteran poise from Smith and more scoring. Smith played 33 minutes and shot 4 for 10 from the field for 12 points.

It was just the second start of the season for Smith, who was coming off knee surgery and a five-game suspension for violating the league's antidrug policy. He was 1 of 9 in a gruesome 120-89 loss to the Spurs on Sunday.

"It's just to see if we can get off to a better start," Woodson said.

"I'm still trying to get defense and some offense, too," Woodson added, "where we've struggled in the early part of the season here. We've struggled to score points. I know he will give us effort defensively."

Woodson also said: "I just thought last year it was a better fit for our ball club for him to come off. That's not to say he's going to continue to start. We'll just see how it plays out. Right now, I'm just searching in terms of rotation and just get guys to play."

With trade rumors swirling, Woodson said he was going to have a talk with Shumpert, a 23-year-old swingman, about the business of the N.B.A.

"I'll mention it to him; I heard some rumors today," Woodson said. "It's a part of our business. I just try and tell young players if your name is being floated out there, it means somebody wants you and that's a good thing; it's not bad. The best players have been traded."

Shumpert scored just 5 points, but he had nine assists and four steals, including two thefts in the fourth quarter that led to 4 points.

Smith provided some early energy and made 3 of 5 shots in the first half, but Anthony was determined to be the drive behind the Knicks. He showed off his ball handling, his 3-point shot and his aggressiveness in following shots, and the Knicks followed his lead on the offensive end.

The Knicks made 21 of 43 shots in the first half, including 8 of 19 3-pointers. The heavy offense took care of the continued distress on defense. Three nights after being carved up by the Spurs for 17 layups, the Knicks allowed 34 points in the paint in the first two quarters against the Hawks.

Still, the Knicks led by 55-45 at the half with the roll of 3-pointers, but when the Hawks came out in the second half and started pressing the pace with guard Jeff Teague, the Knicks were in trouble. They could not cope with Teague and then started missing 3-pointers — 14 in a row in one stretch. The Hawks' 6-foot-10 Al Horford ran the floor with Teague and had two dunks and two layups.

The Knicks were outscored, 23-10, and trailed by 68-65 at the end of three periods. They were down, 78-72, when Anthony suddenly became hot. He scored with a free throw, then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start an 11-0 run, and the Knicks surged to an 83-78 lead with 5 minutes 49 seconds to play.

Teague was slowed in transition, and the Knicks started clicking with offense. Shumpert made two steals and fed Raymond Felton for two baskets.

Bargnani then banked in a 3-pointer to give the Knicks a 90-81 lead with 2:45 to play, and the Knicks held on the rest of the way to avoid turning turbulence into turmoil.
