WASHINGTON — A Secret Service supervisor has been removed from President Obama's security detail and demoted after being accused of leaving a bullet in a woman's room at a luxury hotel near the White House this year, senior federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
The former supervisor, Ignacio Zamora Jr., is still under investigation and has not yet been formally disciplined, the officials said.
Mr. Zamora is said to have gone back to the woman's room at the hotel, the Hay-Adams, in June after having had drinks with her, the officials said. After the woman discovered that Mr. Zamora had a weapon, she asked him to leave, and he did, the officials said. Mr. Zamora, the officials said, did not try to re-enter the room.
The woman later discovered a bullet in the room, according to the officials. Secret Service officers typically have a bullet in the chamber of their firearms and remove it and the magazine as a precaution in situations that do not appear to pose a threat.
Mr. Zamora was taken off the president's security detail shortly after the Secret Service learned of the episode, the official said. The Washington Post first reported details of the investigation on its website on Wednesday night.
The disclosure has reignited questions about the conduct of Secret Service officers that surfaced last year. In April 2012, several Secret Service personnel at an international summit meeting that Mr. Obama was attending in Cartagena, Colombia, were caught spending the night with prostitutes.
That incident was one of the most embarrassing in the agency's history and led to the firing of several of its personnel.
The Department of Homeland Security's inspector general has been investigating misconduct in the Secret Service since the Colombia episode, and its findings are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
