Updated, 10:06 p.m. More than 2,100 flights across the country were canceled, and motorists from Chicago to Boston faced treacherous driving conditions as a fierce winter storm moved east Thursday, dumping piles of snow, bringing bitter cold and threatening blizzard conditions overnight for much of coastal Massachusetts and parts of Long Island.
Air travelers also encountered 6,000 delays, according to FlightAware's online, real-time interactive map. That number is expected to grow as the storm limited operations at several airports in the Northeast, including Logan Airport in Boston. The last flight was to depart at 8:30 p.m. Flights are not expected to resume at Logan until late Friday morning.
For motorists, snow-blanketed highways in Chicago and other cities across the Midwest created dangerous driving conditions. In the Northeast, most commuters managed the evening rush before heavy snow and strong winds made travel impossible in some parts. With blizzard conditions in the forecast, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York declared a state of emergency and ordered several major highways shut down from midnight to 5 a.m. Friday, including the Long Island Expressway and the New York State Thruway south of Albany.
Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey also declared a state of emergency and shut state offices on Friday.
I ask all New Jerseyans to stay off the roads if possible so that first responders can safely respond to any emergency situations #Hercules
