The hit Broadway musical "Once," which won the Tony Award for best musical in 2012, will close on Jan. 4 after a nearly three-year run, the producers announced on Tuesday.
A romantic tale about a young Irishman and a Czech woman who grow close over a few days' time in Dublin, "Once" turned a profit faster than most Broadway shows after earning back its $5.5 million capitalization in less than six months after performances began in February 2012. The show had strong reviews going for it, as well as appealing lead performances in its first year by Steve Kazee, who won the Tony for best actor, and Cristin Milioti, who was nominated for a best actress Tony. The show won eight Tonys over all, including for best book for Enda Walsh and best director for John Tiffany. The musical was based on the 2006 film of the same name; both the show and the movie featured music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova.
Ticket sales for "Once" began to slide this year, with the show facing stiff competition from newer, popular musicals like "Kinky Boots," "Matilda the Musical," and "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical." Late last month "Once" grossed less than $400,000 in ticket sales for the first time in its run.
By the time "Once" closes, the musical will have played 22 preview performances and 1,167 regular performances. Other productions of "Once" include a London run and a United States tour of the show. The next tenant for "Once's" house, the Jacobs Theater, a prime spot on Broadway, has yet to be announced.
